100% Mulberry Silk Fiber known as Mawata or Bombyx Silk
Hand Dyed Silk Hankies, dyed with professional acid dyes by me, utilizing colorways I have designed myself; inspired by nature's palate and beauty. I hand dye these in a crockpot. 2.0 ounces (56 grams) of silk hankie are layered in water into the crockpot and then dye was applied to specific areas depending on my colorway. The dye penetrates in some areas more than others leaving areas of white. This then creates it's own unique design. I then separate the hankies into four 0.5 ounce (14 grams) batches insuring each batch has some of each section.
When this listing is sold out and I need to do a new dye lot; I take photos of the new dye lot before renewing the listing, to insure what you see is what you are getting.
Mawata Silk Hankies are 100% silk fiber from a silk cocoon that has been degummed and then stretched onto a 10 x 10 square form. The hankies come in a stack of multiple very thin layers that you peel off individually. They are beautiful felted - just place them on top of your design before felting to get a cobweb effect. They can also be spun by stretching the hankie into a big loop and pulling as thin as you want. You can also knit directly from them once stretched - they do not need to be spun. They are also used in paper making and silk fusion projects.
This listing is for a 0.5 oz. (14 gram) stack of silk hankies dyed in my "Alaskan Nights" colorway as shown in the photos. Purple, blue and turquoise with areas of white. (Unfortunately your monitor may not be showing how vibrant these colors are together.....) Photo shows 2 ounces (56 grams) of fiber laid out to show you how the dye has penetrated the silk. This was then separated into four 0.5 ounces (14 gram) each.
Helpful Hint: When working with silk hankies it may help to wear surgical gloves. Silk fibers LOVE to attach themselves to dry skin or rough fingernails. I find wearing the gloves helps.
I do my best to take accurate pictures of my colorways; however some monitors may show colors differently.
Hankies may contain small particles from the cocoon; hankies may have a small puncture hole in 1 of the corners - they come this way from the manufacturer.
Hankies were hand dyed with professional acid based dyes; they were left in the dye bath until all color was exhausted then rinsed to remove any residual dye; however as with any dyed product - care should be taken when wet felting or washing. COLD water wash only.
All products are stored in my smoke free - pet free home.
